With its debut album, this young band from Vienna follows the footsteps of honorable Austrian prog masters like "Matter Of Taste". The music on this concept album is not of the kind I'd call particularly innovative - it travels pretty much on well known roads paved by many others long ago. However, these youngsters do it in a highly pleasant way, skillfully avoiding the pitfalls of pseudo-progressive phrase rehashing most of the time - certainly more successfully so than several of their experienced grand paragons of prog.

Since Carsten Pieper writes so enthusiastically about this band, I had to give it a try, and really, I'm very enchanted! Well, I always can rely on Carsten's opinion... So this is a demo?! That's kind of an understatement. It's much better than lots of official releases cranked out by other bands nowadays, and sold for big bucks. This phenomenon reminds me of the superb "demo" issued back in 2003 by Jordsjø's compatriots Wobbler, containing a similar kind of retro prog in the vein of early 70's kraut.

"album name" is a great name for an album! :-D Brent Lackie describes "Oatmeal Stout" as his "ongoing progressive rock project", and with that, he obviously means that the music comprises drums, electric guitars, proggy keyboard sounds, and some of the genre-typical odd time signatures. Apart from that, it's largely compatible with his other works he recorded as "The Lackey" and under his own name, and actually, there is a reworked version of "Waves Of Orbit" included, subtly renamed to "Waves In Orbit", and originally found on Brent Lackie's neo-classical symphonic album "The Lackey".

LÁQUESIS - Láquesis - (2013)

While the name "Láquesis" - one of the "Three Fates" in Greek mythology - immediately raises memories of Keith Emerson's suite of 1970 about those three ladies, the music of this excellent new symphonic rock band from Argentina doesn't have much in common with ELP, except, maybe, for the use of extensive keyboard layers. Fortunately, besides one conspicuous musical adaptation of a riff from Kerry Livgren's "Carry On Wayward Son" at the beginning and end of "Hamacamatic", there's no obvious rehashing of ancient prog legacy, and the inclusion of prog stereotypes is kept to a reasonable minimum. Rather, the music is built on venerable ground laid by classic Argentine symphonic rock bands, like "Pablo el enterrador", for instance. Another great release on the superb "VIAJERO INMÓVIL" label.
